Is NFLX’s Rally Overdone?

Jan 29, 2018

Gaining more than 40% over the course of a year is a fantastic performance for most companies, but for leading streaming service Netflix (NFLX) it’s just a simple month’s work. You read that right. Less than one month into 2018, NFLX is up a whopping 41%. And that’s on top of the 55% return the stock enjoyed in 2017. As a member of the famed FAANG group – Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Netflix and Alphabet (GOOGL) – the company is often compared to the other technology darlings when it comes to performance and valuation. But in reality, there is no true competitor to NFLX. Continue Reading…

Is UAA on the Verge of a Comeback?

Jan 26, 2018

Under Armour (UAA) went down as one of the worst performing stocks in the S&P 500 last year. After losing half its value, the company is now in the precarious position of trying to rescue a sinking ship that has several major holes. The biggest issue I have with UAA is its lack of sales growth – it’s a paltry 4.8% over the last 12 months. A lot of this has to do with increased competition from European brands like Adidas (ADDYY) and Puma, both of which are making a comeback and eating into the market share of Under Armour and category leader Nike (NKE). Operating margins are also a problem, and we'll talk more about that in this latest article. Continue Reading…

Blockchain Boom Builds

Jan 24, 2018

Know what I get asked about most these days? I think you’ll only need one guess to figure it out. Yes, blockchain and bitcoin. To a lot of people, the extraordinary buzz surrounding this NexGen theme seems to have started last year. That’s certainly when it snowballed, but believe it or not, we’re actually approaching the 10-year anniversary of blockchain. Still, we’re really only in about the first or second inning of the ball game. It will take decades for blockchain to achieve what it is capable of. Think about the internet and how it took decades to evolve. There is a lot of money to be made in blockchain for those who are smart about how they invest and don’t just chase the latest headlines. Not Time to Buy VIPS Just Yet

Jan 22, 2018

Vipshop Holdings Limited (VIPS) is trying to make a comeback. The stock fell to a multi-year low in October and had struggled to hold on to any short-term gains while many of its competitors traded at or near historic highs. But it looks like the relative weakness could be coming to an end, as shares of the Chinese e-commerce company have doubled in just a couple of months. They’re up 100% from their October 30 low and already 33% in the New Year alone. The big turnaround started in mid-December when VIPS announced that Tencent Holdings (TCEHY), one of the world’s largest e-gaming companies, was leading an $863 million investment into the company with JD.com (JD). Will MRK’s Rally Burn Investors?

Jan 19, 2018

The New Year has been good to Merck (MRK), as shares of the global giant rallied to their best level since October on the back of positive headlines this week. The stock is now up 15% from the 52-week low that was set in November. Merck’s wild ride began in October, when the company reported earnings and missed revenue projections by 2%. Management pulling a European marketing application for its key drug Keytruda also added to the selling. However, things have been turning around recently, and Tuesday’s announcement that Keynote-189 – a combination study using Keytruda – showed positive results sent the shares up nearly 6% while the overall market closed lower. A Firsthand Look at One Area of Opportunity

Jan 17, 2018

I have made it a bit of a tradition to kick off a new year by traveling to a part of the world I have yet to explore. I view it as half work and half fun, which is the perfect combination for me. The fun part involves taking in the landmarks and enjoying good food and drinks. The work part is all about searching for new investment ideas. By seeing other cultures firsthand, analyzing how they live and talking to both locals and other travelers, I get a true sense of that part of the world. Some trips produce more investment ideas than others, but I’m happy to report that this year’s adventure did clarify some NexGen moneymaking opportunities that I fully expect to act on in 2018. The Age-Old Debate: Growth vs. Value

Jan 15, 2018

Investors have been fighting over whether growth or value stocks are better for as long as I can remember, and the age-old debate has found its way back into the headlines as the calendar turns the page to 2018. Growth stocks won out last year, with the S&P 500 Growth Index raking in a 25.4% gain compared to the value index’s return of just 12.7%. And growth has continued to outpace its counterpart through the first two trading weeks of the New Year. I’m not the biggest fan of this debate – I prefer to focus on specific stocks and their individual potential. However, looking out over the next 12 months I can make a case for both groups. Should You Buy BAC Ahead of Earnings?

Jan 12, 2018

The financial sector has gotten off to a strong start in 2018 thanks to a concoction of rising interest rates, declining unemployment, a robust housing market and a global economy that’s set up for another strong year. Many stocks within this group have traded well recently, and with the fourth-quarter earnings season kicking off, there’s one in particular I want to take a closer look at. Bank of America (BAC) had a great 2017, moving up almost uninterrupted throughout the year to rake in gains of 33.5% from start to finish. This year has started off just as strong with a near 4% climb in the first two weeks of trading, which is thanks in part to a big rise in the 10-year Treasury yield. Continue Reading…

NexGen Transportation on Display in a Big Way

Jan 10, 2018

If you are as fascinated by NexGen trends as I am, this is the week for you. The absolutely huge Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is under way in Las Vegas. Many of these innovations being showcased are right smack in the middle of the trends we’re following and already making money on – things like artificial intelligence (AI), the always connected Internet of Things (IoT), voice assistants, the smart home and more. Many interesting companies use CES to announce product improvements, new creations or ideas that are in the works. I always keep a close eye on what comes out of the show, and so far, NexGen transportation has emerged as one of our themes with some pretty cool developments. Continue Reading…

Is WATT the Real Deal or a Fake-Out?

Jan 07, 2018

The FCC made headlines last week with its first-ever approval of a wireless, “power-at-a-distance” charger. Created by Energous (WATT), the WattUp Mid Field transmitter is able to charge devices at a distance of up to three feet. WATT is currently the first company to achieve charging devices both at contact and at a distance. This is big news for the industry and investors were clearly happy, too, as WATT shot up over 200% on the day of the announcement. An analyst even came out and predicted that the new charger will be available this quarter and could generate as much as $169 million in revenue this year. Continue Reading…
