Let the Games Begin

Jun 20, 2018

If I were making my living as a professional athlete, I wouldn’t let myself be sidelined by an injury from playing a video game. Football was my sport. As a wide receiver, I had defensive backs looking for every opportunity to flatten me, so I didn’t need a video game to also injure me. If you’re wondering what the heck I’m talking about, let me tell you. Earlier this year, Boston Red Sox pitcher David Price was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome after he began experiencing numbness in his fingers. It got bad enough that he missed a start in May, and the rumors quickly surfaced that the time he spent playing the wildly popular video game Fortnite may have contributed to the problem. Boots on the Ground…And on TV

Jun 13, 2018

I traveled last week to one of my very favorite cities – Toronto – to attend the O’Cannabiz Conference, which featured CEOs from the top cannabis companies in Canada. There is going to be a lot of money made as both medical and recreational use of marijuana becomes more widespread, and I’m knee deep in my research, part of which is face-to-face conversations with people in the front lines of what’s unfolding. While I was in Canada, I also got asked to come by the BNN Bloomberg studios for an appearance on The Close with Catherine Murray. We had a great conversation about things people are asking me all of the time. Continue Reading…

Here’s Why I’m Still Bullish on Ethereum

Jun 10, 2018

The cryptocurrency market has been volatile this year as news flow has stagnated, but this hasn’t changed my long-term outlook one bit. Eventually, this industry will become part of normal portfolios. While the transition will take years and be a bumpy ride, getting in early is how patient investors make the big bucks. There are several coins I like for their long-term potential, and one I’m particularly bullish on is Ethereum. This coin is second to Bitcoin, but in my opinion it is the superior option as its speed and lower cost make it the preferred method of moving money from one entity to the other. Continue Reading…

Buy FINX If You’re Looking for FinTech

Jun 08, 2018

The majority of Wall Street implements a bottom-up approach to investing, which means they identify stock ideas based on fundamentals and disregard sectors and trends. But I like to implement a top-down investing strategy because it puts more of the odds in our favor. A top-down approach allows us to focus on the trends and sectors first. We can stop there, or we can dig deeper to uncover the strongest stocks within the theme. At first glance, you may think that doing the extra research will allow you to uncover better investment ideas. Oftentimes it does, but sometimes stopping at the sector level is just as rewarding. Let me explain. Continue Reading…

The Day Is Coming

Jun 06, 2018

Do you remember the buzz when the calendar rolled over from 1999 to 2000? Sure, the New Year’s Eve parties were grander than ever, but I’m talking about more than that. There was excitement about what was to come as we stood on the doorstep of not just a new century but a new millennium, and there was plenty of fear, too. The dire predictions about Y2K crashing computer systems all over the world were about as wrong as you could get. Now look where we are 18 years later with computers in our pockets that can connect to just about anything and also serve as phones, cameras, music players, televisions and so much more. Should You Buy MB After its Post-Earnings Dip?

Jun 03, 2018

It was clear that investors didn’t like MINDBODY’s (MB) first-quarter earnings report on May 8, as the shares took a 17.6% haircut the day after the numbers were released. The company beat on both the top and bottom lines, so the culprit was the fact that full-year earnings guidance was lowered. It also didn’t help that the stock had rallied 20% in the three weeks prior. MB traded at its best level ever just two days before the quarter was reported, and the sell-off took it down to a low just under $35. However, it has since bounced 14% and is now attempting to break through resistance around $40. If it’s successful, I suspect we’ll see some fresh buying activity. Continue Reading…

BABA is Riding This Catalyst to New Highs

Jun 01, 2018

Most investors regard Alibaba (BABA) as the leading e-commerce company in China. And many consider it great because of its equally great and well-known leader, Jack Ma. Both of those statements are 100% true, but neither represent BABA’s single most important and, in my opinion, attractive quality. I have been a big fan of BABA for some time now, and it really boils down to the fact that this is not a company that is solely focused on e-commerce. It actually has its tentacles in countless other businesses. I could write endless pages on this topic, but for the sake of my fingers typing away on the keyboard let’s just focus on just the last two weeks. Continue Reading…

Investing in an Up-and-Down Market

May 30, 2018

“How do I manage risk in this market?” That’s one of the most common questions I hear, whether it’s from friends and clients, attendees at my seminars or even folks I just meet on the street. I do understand why I hear it so frequently. Last year the bulls ran the market to high after high and this year the volatility has picked up dramatically. Several-hundred-point swings on the Dow have become more common, and we’ve seen a lot of investors selling and running for the hills. That’s not a risk management strategy – it’s panic selling and will likely lead to greater losses down the road. Thinking about the profits some people left on the table makes my head spin. Continue Reading…

How to Play Blockchain without Getting Burned

May 28, 2018

The word “blockchain” is one of the most misunderstood terms in the market today. There is certainly a connection between it and bitcoin, but the two words are far from synonymous. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that is based on blockchain technology while blockchain is a ledger of records and transactions called blocks that are linked and secure. Blockchain technology has the potential to change the world similar to the way the internet did back in the 1990s. It can be implemented in nearly every industry and will make everyday transactions faster, cheap and more efficient – it’s a win-win for everyone involved. Continue Reading…

What’s the Right Price to Buy TDOC?

May 25, 2018

I have never been shy about my love for Teladoc (TDOC), the leader in the emerging NexGen trend of telehealth. In fact, I wrote an article that talked about its huge potential just a few months ago. The stock has continued to hit new all-time highs even as the broader healthcare sector has languished, and as I write this on May 24 it has been up 13 of the last 15 days. It’s also been in overbought territory for the last two weeks. All of this is great for current shareholders, but for someone who has yet to build a position in TDOC I understand that it may be tricky trying to determine the right time to buy. Well, let’s talk through your options. Continue Reading…
